SUPERLOVE MUSIC STUDIO!!!----- I TEACH: Piano, Voice, Sax, Clarinet, Flute, Composition, Theory, Ableton LIVE, Production, Band Integration, Unintentional Circus Acrobatics (LOL!!!) etc... etc.......
How does my service stand out?
#1) I am enthralled with humor. I love comedy. And, if I were to go into another 'field' it would most certainly be the entertainment of making people laugh. However, when I try to be funny... I'm usually not--- so I just don't try very hard... and usually through circumstance, or my natural penchant to accidentally trip on invisible things... well, I usually have a lot of naturally funny things going on around me. Don't let the optimism here fool you tho! Underneath the lipstick (on the rare event that I do wear it!), there is a sarcastic, kinda wacky, kinda rediculous and vibrantly astrigent, REAL artist here. Think "Jack Black" vs. 'what's his name, Simmons?' in the NEW music movie 'whiplash'. I'm more "Cab Callaway" then "Mother Superior" in The Blues Brothers... (One of my favorite movies btw, AND, one of the reasons I got into music!)...
I think it's interesting to note that "MUSE" the core derivation of the word, "music" also describes, COMEDY. Or, entertainment. Isn't it interesting that the court jester, the comedian- back in olden days.... was considered to belong with the social group of musicians and misfits?! I think the two go hand-in hand, actually. The artist and the comedian are both endowed to share, to 'preach' their observations to the masses--- as a witty truth? Make the uncomfortable a little more confortable.
As a verb, to muse is to consider something thoughtfully. As a noun, it means a person — especially a woman — who is a source of artistic inspiration.
In mythology, the Muses were nine goddesses who symbolized the arts and sciences. Today, a muse is a person who serves as an artist's inspiration. Often filmmakers talk about a certain actor being a muse — meaning the actor inspired a movie. Writers, painters, musicians, and other artists have muses. Muse can also refer to thinking deeply. If you muse about something, you're giving it serious thought.
Are you musing about studying with me? "As you think, so shall you become"--- said Bruce Lee. Did that just send you over the edge into a full throttle YES! (heavens yes kinda question mark)....

**** I can help you learn music...AND I can help you learn about focus, barriers to learning, how to identify and surmount internal struggles and basically... I can almost guarantee, with pretty astute confidence... that, I'm one of the most FUN and funny music teachers on planet earth. My metrics for data accumulation on this one point and subsequent conclusion; is (drum roll, please!) the feed-back I receive from almost two decades of successful, loyal and amazing students, that return week after week with smiling faces, and goals accomplished. I'm so lucky to do what I do--- and I have boxes of Thank You cards to prove it! People seeking musical expansion intrinsically make me happy--- so its' a win win from square one- as my happiness seems to rub off onto others. The simple secret I seize is the ART of staying curious and being willing to experience the miracle of music, in any shape or size! ****
I teach multiple instruments at a Professional level: Piano, Voice, Sax, Clarinet, Flute, Composition (Song writing & major works!) Theory, AND MUSIC SOFTWARE!--- Ableton Live Production (the very HOT, new modality in music composition). I can teach ANY genre... from Mozart to Miles... from Bach to Beck. I do specialize in contemporary & the rough and tough Master style: Jazz, Vocal Jazz and understand that style very thoroughly. I am a classically trained musician, multi-instrumentalist seasoned into incredibly versatile session musician and contemporary leader. You can check out some of my works on bandcamp if you are curious?
****Am I a good fit for you? That IS an important question--- as my interest is also in getting you on the correct 'lines', for you. I can network you into a powerful web of performers. I'm happy to refer my students out to another expert if I cannot fully serve your personal goals. That's why, taking at least one lesson with me is a good decision. I function as an industry consultant and informal "life coach" as well... In other words--- I'm goal oriented... and I have a BIG PICTURE approach with a pretty astute music history and philosophical background. I can dive into music science as well with physics and that kind of stuff, if you're into it!
An example of the number one thing I hear from parents or people seeking a teacher/guide/consultant like me, is: "I wanted Megan to have a RELATER. I wanted a teacher that is respectful to my child and one that will explore deeper into music versus just teaching her how to play music out of a book." Yep. I am your kind of teacher if you are looking for the 'Right Brain' relater. Both intorvert and extrovert. I&ENFP in Myers Briggs to be exact!!!--- I do pack a punch, 'left brain'-wise, too... I just so happen to excel on being dorky cool, in general. haha! (Not trying to be arrogant here! Just embracing who I am wholeheartedly :-)
****Alignment is important for both teacher and apprentice! Boring, stale and stuffy are the antonyms that describe this music studio. This, is a real alive and living music studio that also functions as a recording studio---... I am a seasoned professional that can truly embrace contemporary genres, yet I am fully versed in the classics. There's no pomp and circumstance or snobby pretension here in terms of my approach! We get strait into the nitty-gritty and do this in a very engaging, open and stimulating way! Understated- my place is a cornucopia of productivity and ingenuity-- specializing in innovation, while exercising transparent conversation we dive into condensed musical expertise! There is a bit of an 'alternative-progressive/counter culture approach' here; however, complimented by a stable, resolute and conventional methodology. I also serve as a 'Specialist' in a certain regard; I can engage, authentically, any student that has not had a great experience with a mean or crazily conformist music teacher! I honor the individual, in other words- not my own grandiosity or virtuosity. --- So if this is what you are looking for- a warm, inviting, supportive, invigorating experience that is intellectually challenging while embracing the whole spirit of the student & person- The Superlove Music Studio will be a good fit for you!
Here's another Essay I wrote a while ago when I was bored--- it's a correlation. ....
Want to:
A) never be bored again
B) always have something to work on (ok maybe a restatement of 'never be bored again!' BUT!)
C) feel the exhilaration of engaging in something emotionally intangible but readily perceived as awesome by the masses!...
D) spend lots of money on something that may never 'pay out' but will bring you enourmous amounts of joy!
You can:
A) buy a boat
B) enroll in music lessons
Labor of Love by Jayma Superlove
Not so funny, but funny, ... the reality about college tuition and the price of being a musician:
This was interesting to me, and I thought I would share because I was shocked when I added up what the average musician - and musician’s parents - invest in our wondrous art! I ran some numbers to reflect what I, and my gracious parents, have invested in music and my musical endeavors over the years.
I started adding in high school, because I had the LUXURY of private music lessons only FOUR times. My mom played the piano fairly fluently and I was basically self-taught with a little guidance from her, and a lot of watching her when she played. I got the books and learned the notes and fingerings by myself.
3 Private Lessons- Saxophone @ $15.00; 1 Private Lesson- Clarinet @ $15.00.
I didn’t calculate all the marching band stuff or the equipment before high school because it was too tedious.... so, let’s just say it was probably a $2,000.00 investment.
(I’m sending this to my parents to make them laugh and to covertly thank them, again... and I’m sure they’ll make amendments if my math or reflection is off.....)
Anyway,- these are estimations:
One professional clarinet: $3,000.00
One professional saxophone: $2800.00
One professional keyboard: $2,800.00
Student flute & microphones: $480.00
Amplifiers, misc.: $600.00
Cables and assorted reeds (probably thousands): $1,200.00
Miscellaneous stuff: $300.00
“Training Trips”: European tour; Marching Band tours; Nerdy but STUDLY band camp stuff: $2,000.00.
Private Lessons- Professor of Clarinet
$9,000.00 $3,000.00 $2,500.00
$220.00/hr
Yale University- New York Philharmonic Principal Clarinetist (I had the rare opportunity to study under one of the best clarinetist in the world...)
Lets’ see, it took me 6 years to graduate with 3 minors so .....
$220.00 x 4 lessons a month, times 9 months a year x’s 6 years=
Professor of Saxophone
190.00 x 36 weeks x 6 years=
Professor of Voice half hour x 36 weeks x 4 years=
Graduate Degree Piano Instructor group Lessons hour x 36 weeks x 4 years=
Masters Classes with the likes of: Wynton Marsalias, Nancy Schur, Poncho Sanchez, Arturo Sandoval
=
$7,920.00 $47,520.00
$190.00/hr
$6,840.00 $41,040.00
$80.00/
$2,880.00 $11,520.00
$30.00/half $4,320.00 $2000.00
So, these are the basics of private instruction and not reflecting general tuition.....
so, the investment in lessons for accumulated skill and mastery- $108,400.00
Let me repeat this: $108,400.00 by the age of 22.
Luckily, I worked hard enough to SCHOLARSHIP 40% OF ALL THIS...
So... lets see here..... Totals:
Private Lessons: $62,700-
Equipment: $14,180-
Tours: $14,500-
Blood: Incalculable-
Sweat: Bucket Loads-
Practice Time: A zillion hours-
5 Seconds of screaming fans & feeling like a Rockstar:
Priceless.
-Moral of this story insert now-
According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the average educational debt of indebted graduates of the class of 2009 was $156,456.
That said, as of 2007, the average osteopathic physician's salary was $185,000. Remember, this is an overall figure, in which general practice D.O.s make around $120,000 while neuro surgeon D.O's can make more than triple that.
Elementary Music Teacher $39,000
Full-Time Music Teacher $49,000
Full-Time Piano Teacher $51,000
Most Private Teachers $33,000
Full-Time Music Instructor $53,000
.........................and this is a reflection, before they pay out overhead costs to run their studio.
The bottom Line for most Private Teachers: $20,000/year
Poverty is defined as the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions. Approximately 43.6 (14.3%) million Americans were living in poverty in 2009, up from 39.8 million (13.2%) in 2008. The government's definition of poverty is not tied to an absolute value of how much an individual or family can afford, but is tied to a relative level based on total income received. For example, the poverty level for 2011 was set at $22,350 (total yearly income) for a family of four.
